The malicious software comes, according to The Justice Department, from a group known as Fancy Bear, which is believed to be working with the Russian intelligence service. If left untreated, the program can monitor any traffic passing through your router, do anything you do online, block certain websites or destroy the entire device.

To protect your own device, you can download the appropriate firmware from the manufacturer's site. It is recommended that you connect the downloaded computer directly to the router using an ethernet cable to prevent any problems during communication.



Netgear router

Netgear routers (NTGR), you can go to routerlogin.net to access the router page. Once you're signed in to your account, go to the Administration tab under Advanced, and then click Refresh.

Linksys router

The latest software can be found on the Linksys support website. You must then type the following IP address in the browser address bar ( 192.168.1.1 ) before going to the Administration. From there, you'll need to choose to upgrade your firmware and choose the firmware you want to install.

MikroTik router

The MikroTik routing owner can update its firmware via the RouterOS program, making the update relatively easy.

TP-Link router

For TP-Link router users, visit the TP-Link Download Center to update the appropriate software. You'll then need to access your router by going to tplinkwifi.net and entering your login data. There, you can install the firmware to update your device.
