How COVID-19 Causes Loss of Smell ? American scientists reveal the "secret"

US researchers recently said that they have discovered the reason why people with the emerging virus "COVID-19" lose their ability to smell, temporarily.

One of the common symptoms among people with "Covid 19" is the loss of smell, but the cause of this has remained unclear to date.

Scientists from Harvard Medical School explained that they studied all the cells used by the body for smelling, and measured their vulnerability to the emerging coronavirus.

The results revealed that what is known as the "sensory neuron", an element that monitors and transmits the sense of smell to the brain, is not a cell that is highly susceptible to coronavirus infection.

In contrast, the scientific team found that the SK virus attacks cells that communicate the signal to the "sensory neuron" or what is known as "metabolic support", as well as attacking some blood vessels and stem cells.

The study stated that most of the infection with the Corona virus does not portend a permanent loss of sense of smell, noting that those with the Covid-19 pandemic are 27 times more likely to develop olfactory loss than non-infected people.

why does covid cause loss of smell ?

Sandeep Robert Datta, a researcher who led the study, a professor of neurobiology at Harvard College of Demand, said that the study found that the corona virus does not change the sense of smell through cells, but rather by affecting the function that provides energy to these cells, according to British Sky News quoted.

Sandeep added that the study carried good news, which is that once recovered, the neurons linked to the smell do not need to be replaced or remodeled due to the damage done.

The American academic confirmed the researchers' need for more data on patients in order to resolve the abstracts presented.

People with coronavirus complain of varying levels of decreased sense of smell, but the matter is often temporary and soon ends after recovery, the researchers said.
