Explosion in the vicinity of the US embassy in the Egyptian capital

Egyptian security forces arrested a man after he threw a bomb exploded in the vicinity of the US embassy in central Cairo, according to news agency Reuters quoted Egyptian security sources.

There were no reports of casualties.

The embassy is located in the Garden City neighborhood, which has a number of heavily guarded foreign embassies and consulates, but security forces have imposed more security in the area and closed roads leading to it.

A security official at the Interior Ministry told the BBC that a person carrying a suitcase with an explosive device detonated in the vicinity of the embassy.

The US Embassy in Egypt posted on its Twitter page that it was "aware of an incident that took place on Simon Bolivar Street in Cairo", asking everyone to be careful.

The embassy said public transport near the area had been disrupted by the accident.

Later, the US embassy said in a statement on Twitter that the Egyptian police had completed their preliminary investigations at the site of the incident and announced the return of the embassy to work again.

Attacks by militants in Egypt have eased recently, but some areas, including the capital Cairo, are occasionally attacked by armed militants, mostly targeting security elements.

In the Sinai region, north-east of Egypt, there are militant organizations, including the "Sinai State" organization, which is described as the branch of the Islamic State Organization in Egypt.
