State of emergency declared in Ecuadorian prisons after more than 100 prisoners killed
Ecuadorean President Guillermo Laso on Wednesday evening declared a state of emergency in all of the country's prisons, after more than 100 prisoners were killed in gun battles inside a prison in the southwestern state of Guayas.
"I have just declared a State of Exception in the entire prison system at the national level." the president said on Twitter.
Acabo de decretar el Estado de Excepción en todo el sistema carcelario a nivel nacional.

The president's decision came after the prison service announced in a tweet on Twitter that "more than a hundred prisoners were killed and 52 injured" in the armed confrontations that erupted Tuesday between prisoners in the prison complex in Guayaquil, the capital of Guayas state.
A previous toll had stated that 29 prisoners had been killed and 42 others wounded in the confrontations. In his tweet, the President of the Republic said that he would chair in Guayaquil "the security commission responsible for coordinating the necessary measures to control the emergency while guaranteeing the human rights of all concerned."
The local police official, General Fausto Buinano, who led the operation to regain control of the prison, said Tuesday that the confrontations resulted in the death of 30 prisoners, including six who had been "beheaded".
