Bakersfield shooting - Gunman kills his wife and 4 people then turns the gun over his chest and kills himself in front of the police and people
Authorities are trying to find out what led an armed man to kill five people in successive shootings in Bakersfield on Wednesday night before turning the gun over himself. Sheriff County Kerne Donnie Youngblood said he had become "the new natural situation" in the country.
The incident began around 5:20 pm, when the man was in a truck he and his wife were facing another man. Youngblood said the gunman shot at the man and then turned the gun over to his wife and killed her.
A third man appeared, chased by the gunman to the Bear Mountain Sports store and shot him. Then he went to a nearby house and shot and killed two other people.
Sheriff Kern said the man then kidnapped a woman and her child in her car. She managed to escape as the armed man drove to Edison Highway, where the officer saw him.According to the Los Angeles Times .
"This is a new natural thing if you look around the country in these types of shooting crimes," Sheriff County Sheriff Denny Youngblood told a news conference. The incident marks the third-largest firefight in the country this year after the Parkland attack in Florida, which killed 17 people and a secondary school incident in Santee, Texas, which killed 10 people.
Authorities are investigating 30 witnesses and taking evidence from the crime scene to find out what led to the incident.
One of the injured, Laura Garcia, was identified as 32 years old. Her family described her as a loving mother

Donny Youngblood said it was clear that there were some situations that caused great discomfort to the husband, stressing the need for a relationship between the victims and clearly this is not a random shooting.
It would take days to see all witnesses and collect forensic evidence from the scene of the crime, he said.
MP Kevin McCarthy expressed his shock at the shooting in a tweet via Twitter.
Saying "Judy and I are shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific loss of life in Bakersfield yesterday. Our entire community, with one heavy heart, is praying for the victims and their families"
