New York - Twenty people died and a shock occurred in New York City, north of New York, on Sunday after a "horrific" incident in a limousine near a winding rural intersection.

At a press conference on Sunday afternoon, authorities said all 20 victims were adults. He was 18 dead in a limousine, and had two bystanders.

"Everyone was killed in a limousine," said Christopher Fury, First Deputy Chief of Police for New York State.

State police said the accident occurred before 2 pm. On Saturday when they crossed the limousine, the 2001 Ford Road, the intersection of State Road 30 and Highway 30A, speeded at 50 mph. A limousine hit the unmanned Toyota Highlander in a parking lot in a local shop, wounding two passers-by and killing them.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were at hand to assist in the investigation. President Robert Somolat said the incident was "the bloodiest transport accident in this country since February 2009" when a plane crashed in a house outside Buffalo, New York, killing 49 people. Somalet said he expected the NTSB investigation to take about five days.

Amy Dunlop Johnson said three of her family members - her cousin Ritchie, Axel Steinberg and his wife's cousin Amy Steinberg - were in limousines and died in the accident. Local media initially reported that the limousine had a wedding, but Dunlop Johnson said the limousine was transporting the group among wineries in the region, a popular tourist destination.

A limousine crashed in front of spectators at the Apple Barill cafe and coffee shop in Qatar. "There was a terrible incident in front of our business today," one of the publications on Facebook said on Saturday. Last Sunday, the store said it was open to work "and could be used as a hug."

New York Governor Andrew Como said in a statement that he directed state agencies "to provide all the resources needed to assist in this investigation and determine what led to this tragedy."

"I share with all New Yorkers the mourning for these deaths and their participation in the indescribable grief that their families and loved ones suffered at this very difficult time," she said.

At least six ambulances and two helicopters have responded, according to WRCP television. The names of the victims have been withheld pending notification of the nearest relatives and completion of the autopsies.

The 2001 Ford Excursion limousine was traveling southwest on Route 30 in Schoharie around 2 p.m. when it failed to stop at a T-junction with state Route 30A and crashed into an SUV parked at the Apple Barrel Country Store and Cafe, Fiore said.

Authorities didn’t release names of victims or other specifics, but state police set up a hotline for family members.

New York Sen. Chuck Schumer tweeted: "May God bless the families who lost loved ones."
