Jamal Khashoggi fiancee declines White House visit after Trump comments

Khadija Genghis told Turkish television she believed the call was aimed at influencing public opinion in the United States.

Khashoggi was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul three weeks ago.

Saudi Arabia initially denied any connection to Khashoggi's disappearance after entering the consulate, before announcing that an internal investigation indicated he had been killed by mistake in a failed operation to return him to the kingdom.

In a column in The New York Times earlier this month, Khadija said that if Trump "made a real contribution to efforts to uncover what happened inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul that day, I would consider accepting his invitation."

In the meantime, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan asked Saudi Arabia to reveal the whereabouts of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed inside the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul earlier this month.

Most Western allies in Saudi Arabia expressed shock at Khashoggi's death and demanded a full explanation of what had happened.

While Germany was the first Western country to say it would stop all arms exports to the Gulf state, France described Berlin's move as "demagoguery."

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday that selling arms "has nothing to do with Mr. Khashoggi.

The European Parliament on Thursday passed a non-binding resolution urging an EU-wide arms embargo against Saudi Arabia in response to the murder.

But Russia said it should be thought "there is no reason why anyone should not believe" the Saudi version of Khashoggi's death, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Pskov said.

Where is the body?

In a television interview on Friday, Khadija recounted the events of the day Khashoggi disappeared, saying she would never allow her fiancé to enter the consulate if she believed that "the Saudi authorities would plot a plot" to kill him.

"I ask that all those involved in this brutality be prosecuted and punished from the highest levels to the lowest," she told Haberturk television.

She said she was not contacted by any Saudi official, but was excluded from going to Saudi Arabia to attend a funeral in case Khashoggi's body was eventually found.

The Saudi prosecutor said Khashoggi's death was "premeditated" and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on Riyadh to recognize who was ordered to kill and where the body was.
