Patient shot and killed at Orlando hospital after threatening staff Without a weapon

ORLANDO, Fl.Orlando Police officers killed a man who threatened to shoot anyone who came near him in the emergency room at Orlando Regional Medical Center

Orlando Police Chief John Mina said during a press conference. The unidentified man was was taken Orlando Regional Medical Center as a patient at approximately 6 a.m. on Monday. After arriving at the hospital, he told the staff that he would "shoot anyone approaching him." The police were called and the emergency room was closed.

The officers began to deal with the man, and decided to approach the man because the patients needed treatment. He said the man looked like he was carrying a gun, and the officers called him fire.

The police chief said that while he was negotiating with him, the man was making gestures indicating that he had a weapon and was aggressive. At one point, he made statements that he would get a weapon from his belt.

The police chief said negotiators in the crisis tried to hand over the man unharmed.

Mina said."We took the fact that there were patients near his room, No weapon was discovered and no one else was hurt".

The man's identity will be released as soon as the next of kin is notified. Officers involved in the shooting will have paid administrative leave pending investigation.

According to Orlando Health, the emergency room was the only one affected. The remainder of the hospital continued normal operations.

Police investigators said the emergency room would be reopened after their investigations were completed.
